Soft Walls
Wynwood Walls, FL | 2023
For this studio, we created an art museum for the Wynwood Walls arts district in Miami, Florida. It was a rough area that bought and rehabilitated by a wealthy developer into one of the most popular areas in Miami. The idea started by bringing in artists and commissioning them to create murals on the existing buildings. The murals are rotated out each season, giving opportunity to emerging artists and helping them create a fan base from the people that travel to see the exquisite works of art. There is great controversy within the site because the artists that were once paid for the rotating murals are often not anymore, as the landlords think that they are doing the artists enough of a favor displaying their work. Often, the work goes unpaid or for a very little stipend. We were instructed to incorporate the murals into our museums, and have lots of surfaces to help display the work. This museum incorporates removable tactile facades that the artist can graffiti on and then remove and sell at the end of each season. This way the artist can monetize their work, while still being able to display it. The main point of this studio was to create large scale 1/2” models throughout the semester. We started building after only one month of design, as these were intended to be incredibly detailed.
